Books, when you find a good one, is like finding a new wise friend. You are eager to get to know and learn from this friend. You are excited to uncover the wisdom s/he offers.
I love books because I love learning. The best books, in my opinion, are the ones that point me to God. The ones that help me see the beauty of my Saviour. The ones that make my heart burn with love and conviction.
So, it is a privilege for me to share the books that I have been devouring recently. And yes, I am that kind of person that reads multiple books at a time :)
1. In My Father's House by Corrie Ten Boom - This book is a gem! I always look forward to reading a chapter of this book every night before bed. I get all cosied up under my duvet with my tea. With this book in my hand, seeing the words under my reading tiny book lamp, I am caught up with the words on the page before I know it. This book is about Corrie's childhood memories and what it is like living a Christian life in a simple house with godly parents in Holland. This is an excellent book to read before The Hiding Place, a book by the same godly woman, a Dutch watchmaker who lived during the Second World War and was imprisoned for hiding the Jews in her home. I laugh and cry when I read this book. It is beautifully written. It is moving. It is funny. It is inspiring. I love it!
2. Flowers From A Puritan's Garden by Charles Spurgeon - This book is a wee devotional-like book that takes a passage from a Puritan, Thomas Manson and expands on it. I read this book alongside my Bible reading in the morning. I read a page and meditate on it. Puritans have so much wisdom that we can glean from, especially because it is hard to find the space nowadays to pause and think deeply about God.
3. Living the Psalms by Charles Swindoll - This is one of the best devotionals I have come across thus far. It is because it explains the Psalms exegetically well. It includes the structure of the Psalm, the historical context, the meanings of the original words, and what it means for the Christian now. I learned so much about Psalms. This devotional shows how the Psalms are relevant in the daily grind of the Christian life.
4. Teach Me To Feel by Courtney Reissig - I've only currently started reading this book. Courtney talks about the theology drawn from the book of Psalms. So far, this book taught me that I can worship God in every season of life. In happy and sad seasons. This book reminds me of Rico Villanueva's book, It's Okay Not To Be Okay. I'm looking forward to learning more from Courtney. Particularly in this season of my life where I fear the unknown.
5. The Enemy Within by Kris Lundgaard - I read this book alongside my mentor. One of the reasons I love this book is that it gets me thinking about the daily battle with sin. It explains the enemy within all of us - the flesh. This book equipped me in thinking about how the will and the mind operates, how Satan tempts, how our flesh deceives and gives biblical advice on how we can walk in holiness. It reminds us that the power of the Spirit helps us in our daily battle with the enemy within. This book is very detailed, full of Scriptural references and questions that get you thinking. It is the kind of book that will hit hard. It is convicting. It calls the Christian to murder the flesh. Daily.
Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;
love her, and she will guard you.
