Sadly, I don't see many young Christians recognise the importance of theology. One comment I saw on one of my Youtube videos (where I share the Christian faith through faith talks and vlogs) "I am a theology nerd too". I get excited to see this kind of comment. At the same time, I am sad that not all Christians get excited about theology.
Theology is not just for pastors, missionaries, Bible teachers and mature Christians. It is for all Christians.
Theology means the study of God. It comes from the Greek word - Theos (God) and logy (the study of). So if we care about God and the things of God, we are going to care about theology.
Many Christians are shallow in their faith because we don't understand who God is.
Many of our contemporary Christian songs are shallow because we don't know who God is.
Many "Christian" best-selling books offer good advice instead of offering the gospel because we don't know who God is.
We are too easily pleased.
It is written:
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
~2 Timothy 4:3-4
We need to get back to the Word of God and study it. We need to get our hands dirty, wear our gloves and boots on and be prepared to work hard to mine the gold of the Scriptures. We need to do theology. We need to study God.
When we understand who it is we are worshipping and see the beauty of our Saviour. Our worship will be one that genuinely glorifies our Father.
This is the greatest commandment:
you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.
~Mark 12:30
I urge you, my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. To love your God with all your being.
May we use our minds to study the attributes of our wonderful, glorious, and vast God. May we know Him deeply. Because only then will we escape these shallow theologies that are so prevalent in our generation.
I pray Paul's prayer for this generation
...it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
~Philippians 1:9-11
